Story
All fairytales begin with "once upon a time" - but this is not a fairytale, this is a horror story. A nightmare. And even though it has happened not so long ago, whenever the story is brought up, it will be talked about like an old legend; whenever Viscets start talking about the monster of the sea, they lower their voices and start to whisper or even dare not to speak at all.
The story starts with the life of a young, male Viscet, whose name was Cain. He grew up in a Hawaiian village, the name of which is unknown, but it is not of much matter anyway. The village was, and still is, next to a breathtakingly beautiful cove and most of the villagers grew up loving the water and embracing it as their second home. In fact, so did Cain. But Cain was not satisfied with sticking to the shallow beach, which is, why he became a fisherman. He soon was the best one the village had and his trade was not only to catch fish and sell it, but he also started to dive and retreat small treasures and trinkets from the depths of the ocean.
He was hardly ever found on dry lands anymore and even built himself a small cottage right next to the water, with a trapdoor in the floor, that he could open, the sea ready beneath his feet. Especially during stormy and rainy days, when the weather was too unpleasant to go out, he would sit over the open trapdoor for hours and hours, just staring at the water, feeding the fish and occassionally catching one or two. Surprisingly, he never ate a single fish in his life. He did not like the taste, he claimed.
The rest of the villagers called him crazy, even his own family were only able to shake their heads at him and wonder, how he had become that way. Nobody, in fact, was entirely sure, and even Cain himself was not able to recall, when his love towards the sea had grown so big. But he did not really mind, anway. The ocean was his home, he was only able to feel real happiness, when he was able to swim with the fish, collect shells or search for mermaids.
Mermaids - Cain did truly believe in them and even thought, that in some way, he was one of them as well. He was still a land dweller, of course, and had to breathe air, in order to survive; but over the years he had learned to hold his breath for up to fifteen minutes. It was not enough, of course, but it was as much as his body could take. And even he realized, that there had to be a limit. Yet he hoped, that he could one day trade his dry home for the sea.
But although he hoped, he never would have considered, that his wish would indeed become reality. Especially not, considering the circumstances. But, to be fair, those were certainly nothing, that anyone hat ever expected.
For years, the villagers have been telling a story, a legend, about the most beautiful and most valuable of all gems. It was supposed to be bright and colorful, big like a grown Viscets fist. Some stories even went as far, as telling, that the gemstone used to be the heart of a deity, the deity of the sea. And with the deity becoming the ocean itself, the stone sank deep into the vast endlesness, disappearing in a dark cave, protected by a abominable sea creature. Of course, many explorers, who had deemed themselves brave, had tried to find and retrieve the stone, but so far, none of them had actually been successful. Most of them, even, had disappeared.
They were seen leaving on their boats or diving down the water and then they suddenly vanished. Some, but only a few, perhaps a handful, came back. Some of them without any memories at all, some of them only recalling a strange darkness and nothing else. The gem stayed hidden and the stories became legends. After many years, nobody actually believed in the existance of this gem anymore - they all deemed it a fairytale. Well, except one: Cain. No matter what he was told, Cain never ceased to believe in the existance of that beautiful gem and he was more determined than anything to find it and call it his own. At some days, it even appeared, that the thought of the gem was the only thing, that kept him going. It had possessed his mind even before he found it.
For a while, he still listened to the warnings of the other villagers. For a while, he realized, that it was way too dangerous and that the chances, that he would find the gemstone for real, were way too slim and the risk was way too great. He did not even know, where the gemstone was hidden anyway, and it was not like the ocean was just a shallow pool. Not to mention the pressure in the deep sea; and, of course, the fact, that holding his breath for 15 minutes might have appeared long so far, but 15 minutes would bring him nowhere. For a while, he understood that. And even though he would stand on the beach, listen to the waves and watch the sun glister at the horizon - he knew, that he couldn't possibly do it.
Only for a while, though. At some point, he stopped caring about the warnings. He wanted to find that gemstone - and if it killed him. He wouldn't die on purpose, of course, so his adventure had to wait for a while yet. At least until he had finished crafting a Do-It-Yourself scuba diving gear, built from scraps and pieces, that he hand found. After a testing round - much to his own surprise, the gear actually worked - he packed a few things, grabbed a boat and sailed away, ignoring the pleadings of his family. His reason seemed long gone, he rather listened to his heart and soul, as he was sure, that the spirit of the sea would lead him to the gem. For some reason Cain seemed to believe, that he and ocean were one. Perhaps he was not fully wrong; they were not one yet, but one they would soon become.
He did not travel all too far, only a few short hours had passed, when something in his guts - or his heart, so he would have claimed - told him to stop. So that was, what he did; and then he put his scuba diving gear on and jumped into the deep blue of the sea. It was the first time, that he was unable to admire the beauty of the underwater landscape and the variety of existing lifeforms, as Cain was way too focused on finding that underwater cave, that he thought to have seen in a vision or a dream. It is certainly not a lie to say, that even Cain himself was quite surprised, when all of a sudden, a huge cave indeed appeared in front of him. His reason told him not to go, but his curiosity was stronger. Curiosity might not have killed the cat, but it surely was a death omen for this particular Viscet.
The inside of the cave was nothing like what it appeared from the outsite. Cain had expected it to be dark and eerie - but what he certainly did not expect, was the sheer amount of wonder, that was presented to him. It was not dark at all, the cave seemed to be illuminated by biolumiscent rocks or shells, of which thousands and thousands were cradled into the stone walls. The cave was quite huge, too, and he could even see an underwater river, that actually managed to take his mind off the gem, even if just for a moment as short as the blink of an eye. And the creatures that he saw frightened and fascinated him just the same - things, he had never seen nor even dared to imagine before. It was as if the cave was a portal to another dimension or an alien planet - just not a part of the earth, that he knew.
If he had doubts about the existance of the legendary gemstone for even one second, these doubts were now washed away by the sparkling underwater river. Admiring the fairytale he just entered, Cain knew by heart, that the gem had to be in this cave somewhere; and he knew, too, that he would find it. Excitement grew in his guts, while he swam further on and the cave did not seem to come to an end. Only then it went dark, all of a sudden. He felt a shiver running down his spine and fear held his heart in a tight grip - but there was a light close by and hoping that the light meant the end of that devouring darkness, Cain swam towards it. Just as he got closer, he realized, what it was: In was the gemstone.
He swam faster and faster, his heart beating like drums in his chest, a paw reaching out for the colorful stone. He found it, he actually did it! And it was even more beautiful, than the words of any mortal being could have described. When he touched it, it felt alive - warm and pulsing, just like a real heart. He cradled it at his chest, as if it was a precious child. He found it. And it was his. His alone. When he registered something moving in the darkness around him, he remembered the stories about the wicked sea creature and for a second he wondered, if he was actually going to die. Then, everthing went black and he lost conciousness.
To his own surprise, Cain awoke again. He took a deep breath, sighed out loud and shook his head. Apparently, this had all been a dream. It had all felt so real and he was sure, that he could still feel the weight of the gemstone on his breast, but...
Then he opened his eyes and saw, that none of it had been a dream. He was still underwater, however, his diving gear was gone. Strange enough, he appeared to breathe water and was not sure if he was to be frightened or excited. He could not find a possible explanation for any of it. Was he dead? It did not feel like it - quite the opposite was the case, in fact. He had never before felt so alive. And most important, the gemstone was real. He was still holding it in one paw. Perhaps it was magical? It certainly looked like it.
He kept the gemstone pressed to his body, while he started swimming again, towards the exit of the cave. He had the gem now and all he wanted, was to show it to the other Viscets from his village. Was it, now? Thinking to himself, Cain shook his head. No. The gemstone was his and his alone. He would never share it with anyone. He knew, that all the land dwelling Viscets wanted it, but after all, he was the one who found it. It was his and his alone. Nontheless, he was hungry, so he decided to swim towards the surface anyway. He still had no intentions in eating fish, so he would have to go back to the village, if he wanted something to eat. Right?
However, when a fisherboat crossed his path, Cain did not only throw his thoughts of going back on land overboard. What he also did throw overboard was the fishermen, who soon enough were nothing but mere bones on the ocean floor. Cain, however, was satisfied. His belly filled and with a piece of a fishing net, he had secured the gemstone to his chest. He could feel the pulsing through his feathers, it felt as if he had grown a second heart.
The gemstone was his and his alone. And he would protect it with teeth and claws.
